Chapter twenty three - Palani

sunny 31 °C

Day 102: Palani, Tamil Nadu 09/01/12

Up and out earlyish, find the bus station and are soon in our customary position on the back seat with the cool kids on our way to Palani. Typically busy Indian service, though this one seems to have a supply of B.O. coming through the air vents (don’t think it’s me anyway) and again some great scenery in the mountains and forests. Help an old man off the bus with some unbelievably heavy bags of spuds.

Get off after three hours and find a very nice place to stay immediately, which is very clean, very new and very cheap. We take a walk and find a shop called London Hi-Style, where we are befriended by one of the lads working there, who studied in Newcastle, who is very proud of ‘our money’ (£20 note he pulls from his wallet) and his Lloyds TSB card. I get some trousers and we leave. We are invited back in for a drink and some photos (we may now be the face of London Hi-Style) before we are taken on the backs of motorbikes to the family home, where we meet the extended family. We are treated with great Indian hospitality and plied with gifts, drinks and food. A very touching moment and one to cherish, visiting an Indian home properly for the first time.

This is the first Indian city we have been in for a while with poverty, rubbish and no western food for G, which comes as a bit of a shock to the system.
